Sustainable Packaging Designer

The Sustainable Packaging Designer will work with internal and external stakeholders to design packaging that best suits the needs of the intended product while complying with budgetary considerations, sustainability goals and manufacturing requirements. The applicant will have experience with multiple packaging materials including a range of plastics and fiber, especially with paperboard, and will work to educate internal and external clients about opportunities for sustainable improvement in their packaging. Job functions will include use of CAD, operation of plotter table, creation of prototypes and/or “one-up” samples for client approval. Job functions may also include use of 3D printer, design challenges, partnerships with external organizations, packaging material discovery and other special projects.

Education and Experience:

  • Possess an undergraduate degree in Materials Engineering, Packaging Science (Or similar), or equivalent training.
  • 3+ years of experience engineering packaging structures
  • Exposure to sustainable problem-solving

Required Skills and Abilities:

  • Familiarity with Adobe CC programs, Artios, and Solidworks.
  • Excellent communication, interest in education
  • Organized, solutions-based thinker
  • Experience educating clients and internal stakeholders who may not be as familiar with the sustainable landscape
  • Comfortable with Sustainable terminology and concepts across material types
  • Familiar with paperboard carton production and processing including raw paperboard characteristics.
  • Able to analyze carton design needs and productions requirements.
  • Recognize bleed, knockouts, blankets, and other printing principles.
  • Understand inputs, outputs, raw materials, waste, quality control, costs and techniques for maximizing the manufacture and distribution of goods.
  • Computer proficient in CAD; with demonstrated experience in packaging design and development.
  • Knowledge of design techniques, principles, tools and instruments involved in the production and use of precision technical plans, blueprints, drawings and models.
  • Capable of operating Plotter table
  • Must be able to ensure, and/or perform and coordinate the multiple simultaneous tasks such as prototype creation and plotter table processing and monitoring, while finalizing another design.
  • Understand bleed, knockouts, blankets, and other printing principles.
