Job Summary

Quad Mechanics are graded based on their competency level and skill sets.   The levels of Mechanic range from Mechanic I to Mechanic III. A Mechanic is expected to perform the duties listed below with minimal assistance, professional attitude, collaborative mindset, and interpersonal skills which are critical to driving productivity in an Industrial work environment.  They must have a Certificate from a registered Apprenticeship program for Industrial Maintenance Mechanic or equivalent industrial maintenance experience of 5 or more years in an industrial environment.  Ideal candidate will be knowledgeable in the areas of machine installation, mechanical maintenance, local work processes, hydraulics and pneumatics, preventive maintenance, machine operation, metallurgy and follow company safety procedures.

Key Responsibilities/Competencies

Mech-I

  • Proven ability to interpret and work from basic assembly, part and exploded view drawings.  Comprehend written and verbal directions.
  • Ability to use Microsoft Office Suite:  Excel, Word, Outlook
  • Perform basic maintenance, repairs, fabrication, and rebuilding of production related equipment.
  • Knowledge in the proper use of hand and power tools including torque wrenches, bearing and seal drivers, drills, grinders, and precision measuring instruments as required by task and in a safe, craftsman like manner. Maintain acceptable tool condition and reliability in order to repair production equipment without causing damage to components.    
  • Utilize all PPE as required by task and training in:  LOTO, Confined Space, and hot works along with an understanding of permitting and procedures for each of these areas.
  • Safety training for the use of PIVs
  • Properly lubricate, identify, adjust, and replace minor common components of production related equipment to include timing chains, sprockets and related components, timing belts, sprockets and related equipment.
  • Display an ability to successfully troubleshoot production related deficiencies and identify potential opportunities to prevent similar conditions through scheduled maintenance tasks or enhancements.
  • Consistently act as an example to safe work habits.  Create and maintain a safe and cleanworking environment and promote safe work habits with all mechanic positions, other skilled trades, production staff and visitors.

Mech-II

  • Proven ability to interpret and work from basic assembly, part and exploded view drawings.  Comprehend written and verbal directions.
  • Ability to use Microsoft Office Suite:  Excel, Word, Outlook
  • Perform basic maintenance, repairs, fabrication, and rebuilding of production related equipment.
  • Skillfully conduct inspections, preventative, proactive and repair type maintenance activities on all production related equipment, to include: bearings, belts and chains, coupling alignment, gear boxes, bench work; pumps, rebuilding and overhauling; conveyor maintenance, fans and blowers, robotics, electric motor replacement and diagnostics. 
  • Utilize and maintain assembly and part drawings to determine part quality and conformity. 
  • Follow SOP’s, and written procedures, to perform all types of proactive and preventative maintenance tasks, repairs and rebuilds on all production related equipment.  Utilize equipment and component documentation to determine proper tensions, speeds, alignment tolerances, pressures, flows, etc.
  • Proactive in creating and maintaining a safe and clean working environment at all times. 
  • Properly lubricate, identify, adjust and replace complex components and assemblies of production related equipment to include cylinder changes, folder and print unit drive train rebuilds, and installation of mechanical speed controls. 
  • Display a complete understanding of the production process and factors that can affect production yields and quality. 
  • Display an ability to routinely and successfully troubleshoot production related deficiencies and determine a plan to correct and prevent similar conditions through scheduled maintenance tasks. Display an ability to successfully troubleshoot production related deficiencies and identify potential opportunities to prevent similar conditions through scheduled maintenance tasks or enhancements.

Mech-III

  • Skillfully conduct and develop inspections, preventative and proactive type maintenance activities on all production related equipment.  
  • Conduct repair type maintenance activities on all production related equipment.  Perform these tasks utilizing precision measuring and test instruments.  Direct and train mechanics, apprentices and production staff to assist you in performing these activities.
  • Develop and perform proper lubrication, identification, adjustment, and replacement of complex components and assemblies of production equipmentspecific to area of expertise (ex: Press, Finishing, Distribution).Direct and train mechanics to assist you in performing these tasks. 
  • Recognize design and engineering design flaws that hinder machine performance and recommend and specify improvements for parts and design.
  • Design, install and document machine upgrades for obsolete system replacement or enhanced machine performance.
  • Through a thorough knowledge of the production process and an awareness of top down codes and other production constraints, focus on root cause analysis and intervention, correction and prevention of these bottlenecks by maintaining proactive and preventative scheduled maintenance task checklists and SOP’s.
  • Assist the groups’ manager or lead person in performing, prioritizing and planning resources for breakdowns.  Support increased productivity of the group by minimizing the interruption of technicians performing planned and scheduled tasks.  Engage in continued education inside and outside the company, to maintain their ability to perform at a high level technologically and interpersonally.

Required Skills:

  • Possess good oral, reading and writing skills for effective communication
  • Ability to work in both a team environment as well as alone
  • Must have a collaborative attitude and open mind to others input and ideas.
  • Must furnish own basic set of hand tools
  • Must know how to properly operate and maintain power tools in order to keep them in a safe working order at all times
  • Have a strong history of safe work practices and training

Preferred Skills:

  • Journeyman Industrial Maintenance Mechanic Card or equivalent experience & education

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to lift and transport up to 50 pounds on a regular basis and up to 75 pounds on an occasional basis
  • Physical endurance and mobility for prolonged standing, walking, frequent bending, stooping, and reaching
  • Ability to work from ladders, lifts, or elevated platforms – indoors and outdoors –  able to work in confined spaces,
  • Ability to work a 12 - hour shift and be available for overtime as required
